Traditionally, placenta capsules have been used to help:

· Balance your hormones
· Increase milk supply
· Combat Fatigue
· Increase your energy
· Prevent signs of aging
· Recover more quickly from childbirth
· Replenish what was lost during childbirth
· Bring the body back into balance
· Prevent and treat the “baby blues”
· Shorten postnatal bleeding time
· Increase postnatal iron levels

Studies show that placenta is extremely nutrient rich, high in iron, protein, vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B6 and of course, your own natural hormones, making it perfectly made for you, by you. Experts agree that the placenta retains hormones, and thus reintroducing them to your system may ease hormonal fluctuations.

Some even believe it can help:

· Build baby’s immune system
· With any type of trauma and life’s many transitions
· Weaning from breast feeding
· Heal bone breaks
· Regulate hormones during menopause

I first learned of mother’s ingesting their placenta as a supplement after childbirth while in school for Traditional Chinese Medicine. This has been in practice in China and many cultures for thousands of years. Almost every mammal ingests their own placenta after the birth, sometimes even ignoring the young until the placenta has been completely ingested.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has used placenta for thousands of years to augment the qi (energy), nourish the blood, and augment the kidney essence. In layman’s terms, it brings the body back into balance, replenishing what was lost during childbirth. In China it is also used for debilitating chronic diseases and widely used as an anti-aging treatment, as well as a variety of other ills, including fatigue and insufficient lactation.

In many cultures the placenta is considered the tree of life, and indeed, without it life would not be possible.

Hormones and the Placenta

The placenta is an endocrine organ, meaning it is a hormone producing organ.  The placenta begins producing hormones at 6-8 weeks gestation to help sustain pregnancy.  These hormonal levels continually increase during pregnancy, and by the third trimester there are 3 times the normal level of hormones in an expectant mother’s system.  By 4-5 days postpartum, these hormone levels will drop to below normal.  This is a huge fluctuation going from 3 times the normal level to below normal hormonal level, and this is where the healing properties of the placenta come into play.

Here are just a few of the scientifically known hormones and their functions that are produced by the placenta and are still viable and intact after delivery.  Amazingly these hormones are such that are needed postpartum, so why would the placenta naturally create postpartum hormones if not to be used to replenish the new mother’s system?

• Prolactin: promotes lactation
• Oxytocin: for pain and bonding; also known as the “love” hormone
• Interferon: stimulates the immune system to protect against infection
• Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: boosts energy and helps recover from stressful events
• Cortisone: combats stress and unlocks stores of energy
• Hemoglobin: replenishes iron deficiency and anemia
• Gammaglobulin: immune booster that helps protect against postpartum infections
• Urokinase Inhibiting Factor & Factor XIII: stops bleeding and enhances wound healing

These are just a few of the powerful healing hormones that the placenta produces, so doesn’t it make sense to safely welcome these hormones back into your system as well as your baby’s through your breast milk?

Are there any research studies on ingesting the placenta?

Unfortunately the research is some what minimal, but as time goes on and more women continue to choose to benefit from their placentas I am positive that there will be more research proving the placenta’s immense benefits.  For now click here to read some of the studies that are out there.  I have prepared 2000+ placentas now and my clients have benefited tremendously, many of them have even had me back to prepare their placenta for their second and third baby!

When is the placenta prepared?

Ideally, the placenta should be started within the first 24 to 48 hours, allowing you and baby to benefit from the most potency the placenta has to offer.  Directly after the birth, the placenta should be placed in an enclosed container (the hospital will put it in a plastic container or a bag) in the refrigerator or in a lunch size cooler with ice if you are in the hospital, until it can be taken home and placed in the refrigerator or until I can get there to pick it up. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours. If you know ahead of time that it will not be prepared within that time frame, it is best to place straight into the freezer. It is very rare that I am not available to start the process within the first 24 hours.

Where is the placenta prepared?

I have a fully dedicated lab space where the preparation is done in a clean, sanitized environment, giving you the greatest quality and care you can ask for.  I have obtained the appropriate Bloodborne Pathogen Course Completion Certification and adhere to the strictest standards of safety as set forth by OSHA and the EPA and conforming to local health department guidelines for food preparation and safety protocols.

How do I know I won’t receive somebody else’s placenta?

This is certainly a valid concern.  I take my career very seriously and would never allow this to happen.  Whether I am only preparing yours that day or I have more than one to prepare, each is properly labeled from the time of pick up all the way to drop off.  Multiple placentas would never be prepared at the same time.  Each is processed one at a time, allowing the necessary time and effort to completely sanitize all equipment and space used.

When can I expect my finished product?

In most cases I have your capsules ready and back to you within 24 hours, occasionally 48 to 72 hours under unusual circumstances.  I aim to please and my clients are always very impressed with my turnaround time.

Why don’t you require that I give you a pathogen report like some other providers?

I want this process to be as easy as possible for you, eliminating any added stress for you during this time.  I treat every placenta as if it is contaminated, wearing protective gloves, clothing and face mask.  Every piece of equipment and workspace used in the preparation to make your capsules and tincture is properly soaked in a 10% bleach solution for no less than ten minutes, killing any potential pathogens.  If your doctor and the nursing staff feel safe giving you vaginal exams, delivering your baby and your placenta with gloved hands, then I too feel safe in properly handling your placenta.  My not requiring you to go out of your way for a full pathogen report in no way jeopardizes you or any other clients and is quite frankly out of a placenta provider’s scope of practice to ask for such documents.  As well, hospitals will not release a placenta known to have a contagious blood borne pathogen.

Will the hospital release my placenta?

Most hospitals in Southern California are great about releasing the placenta.  You should tell your doctor ahead of time that you plan to take your placenta home and write it in your birth plan if you have one.  This way if there is an issue, you can deal with it before you are in labor.  The hospital may ask you to sign a liability release form.  I can also provide you with a form that you can give the hospital if they are reluctant.  If they say it is not their policy to release your placenta to you, ask to see the hospital’s official written policy on this matter.  And know that every single woman who has been denied her placenta and then took the hospital to court has won their case.  Of course it was too late for them to encapsulate their placenta, but that has helped pave the way for others.

What if they want to take my placenta to pathology?

If the placenta needs to be taken to pathology ask if they can do a visual exam or if they can cut a small piece to examine instead of taking the whole placenta. If they insist on taking the whole placenta, you insist that it is kept refrigerated before and after examination, that you get it back within 72 hours, that they use a clean field and sterile equipment for examining, and that they use absolutely no solutions, especially their usual formalin which has formaldehyde in it.  If this solution is used, the placenta is no longer a candidate for encapsulation.

What if I have an epidural or a c-section?

I have had many clients who have epidurals and many who have a cesarean birth, they have benefited just as much as my clients who had completely unmedicated births.  It is my understanding that the placenta acts as a filter, filtering out toxins and sending them back to the mother’s liver to be detoxed from the system.

What if I am a vegetarian?

Not a problem.  Nothing died in the process; only life has provided you with these amazing nutrients and benefits.  As well, the dehydrated and powdered placenta is inserted into vegetarian capsules, not gelatin, and stored in a glass amber jar.  The capsules I use are also gluten-free, yeast free and kosher.

Why should I choose your services over some of the other providers in the area?

What sets me apart from other providers other than my many years of experience in this field, is that I have a fully dedicated lab to prepare in, I am not preparing in my own personal kitchen. Clients are always welcome to visit my space and discounts are offered when drop off and pick up are arranged to my location.

I have a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine and have been properly trained and certified.  I have prepared well over 2500 placentas since 2008 and follow the utmost safety guidelines, having obtained the appropriate Bloodborne Pathogen Course Completion Certification and adhering to the strictest standards of safety as set forth by OSHA and the EPA and conforming to local health department guidelines for food preparation and safety protocols.  I also sit on the advisory board of APPA, a training and certifying organization that sets the highest standard of practice in this industry.

I not only prepare the capsules for you, at no extra charge I prepare a tincture as well, providing you with a lifelong supply of your placenta remedy.  I am no longer taking clients as a doula so I can solely focus on my placenta clients, ensuring a fast turn around time.  I will have your placenta back to you ready to start taking within 24 to 48 hours.

Is this approved by the FDA?

No.  This is not a product.  I am providing a service, I am not selling you anything.  I take what your body naturally made, just as your body naturally makes breast milk for your baby and turn it into something that is palatable for you to ingest.

How long can a placenta be stored in the freezer?

Although it is advised to begin taking the placenta capsules as soon as possible after delivery, placentas that have been properly frozen, meaning that they were frozen just after delivery and have been double-bagged and protected from freezer-burn can also be encapsulated up to 6 months after birth.  While you may not be getting the postpartum benefits, these capsules can be saved and used for you and your baby throughout the years for any type of transition in life or trauma and can also be used for mommy later in life while transitioning through menopause, using your own natural hormones.

Is there any time that I shouldn’t take the capsules?

There are different schools of thought about this in TCM.  Some believe that placenta should not be taken if the body is fighting off a common cold, flu, or infection. If mommy should get a breast infection, the placenta should not be taken until infection is cleared. If symptoms such as chills, fever, sneezing, aches, flushed cheeks, hot palms and feet or night sweats should occur, stop taking the capsules until the body has fought this off. The reason for this is because placenta is extremely tonifying in nature and can cause a pathogen to grow stronger and get deeper into the body.

Other schools of thought believe that the placenta can actually help in these times.  Each woman is different and should listen to her body.  If she feels the capsules are helping during these times, then continue, if she feels that it is indeed making the ailment worse, then definitely stop taking them.

Turning your placenta into a tincture is an added bonus in that it can be used in addition to and long after the capsules are gone.  By tincturing a portion of the powdered  placenta and a few drops of cord blood in a high grade alcohol (the traditional way to tincture), you can increase the length and benefits of your placenta for both mother and child.  The tincture can be used in any time of trauma, transition, hormonal fluctuations, PMS, menopause, emotional distress, anything physical, baby’s first day of school, weaning, growth spurts, I like to think of it as mom and baby’s own personal Rescue Remedy.  Read more here on the details of placenta tincture.

  1. I asked Sara to encapsulate my baby’s placenta a few months before giving birth. It felt intuitive to me that the placenta that gave my daughter nourishment for so long should not be discarded as waste just because the pregnancy is over. Sylvie is 5 days old now, and so far it is obvious to me that the placenta’s magic is working. I started taking the placenta right away, and am surprised that it is so easy. I expected a strange taste, or a queasy feeling…something, but all I have is energy and more energy. Despite the sleep deprivation, phonecalls, diaper changes, and all the time spent gazing at her adoringly, I feel great. Our family has been out since day 2 every day for either a walk or an outing, we even went to the hometown fair! Everyone remarks, you look so vibrant already! The most important thing on my mind right now, is making sure that my milk is coming in and that Sylvie is gaining weight. Well, I’ve been to the lactation consultant for some fine tuning, twice now, and she cannot believe how much milk I have. Today, after twenty minutes of feeding, I still had an abundance. Sylvie drank 1.6 oz from just one side, and the lactation lady gasped and said, “Now, I’ve been doing this a long time, and I don’t think I’ve EVER seen that much milk from one breast before.” There is nothing more satisfying than knowing your child is thriving from your healthy body. Thank you Sara, I know the placenta is a big part of mine and Sylvie’s vitality.

  2. I am a first time Mom and had heard many stories about mothers experiencing postpartum depression. I wanted to enjoy my baby after he was born without having to experience negative mood swings, and that’s when I learned about placenta encapsulation. I thought that it sounded like a wonderful solution and there wasn’t any reason not to try it. When I inquired at the hospital about saving my placenta they said they needed to take it away right after birth for examination as part of their regular hospital procedure. I was worried that I would not be able to encapsulate my placenta after the lab procedures because it could be ruined. I then asked my encapsulation specialist Sara Pereira about this and she informed me that there are waiver forms available so that patients can avoid this lab procedure and retain the placenta for their own use. That is exactly what I did and I was able to have my mother take it immediately home for me.

The next day Sara started the encapsulation process, and since I was still in the hospital my Mother met with her at my house. The following day after I returned from the hospital, I met Sara and she finished the process. She was very nice and answered questions that I had and shared with me many of the benefits of placenta encapsulation. I would recommend Sara and placenta encapsulation to anyone who is considering trying it. I started the pills right after she finished making them, and I took them exactly as was suggested. Even after a very long labor and bad tearing I did not suffer from postpartum depression. My milk came in quickly and my baby put on a healthy amount of weight with out needing any supplementation. He is now almost 2 months old and we are still both doing great. I want to say thank you for helping make placenta encapsulation widely available and helping women avoid unnecessary suffering from postpartum depression after childbirth.

  3. Sara–
The capsules have been great–I am just finishing them up! I have felt wonderful so I am guessing they did the trick. I was very worried because I do suffer from depression and was concerned about post-partum, but I have been very even keel and happy. Thank you so much! I will certainly pass your info on and use you again for our next pregnancy!

  4. Sara Pereira is the only person I recommend for placenta preparation. We went to Chinese Medical school together, and I can’t rave about her work enough! She is certified in placenta encapsulation, she follows the letter of the law in terms of safety and OSHA compliance, and she brings a generous and loving spirit to each preparation. Sara is always eager to take on more placenta clients, and is very diligent about follow-up. I always know, when I refer patients to her, that their placenta capsules will be the core of the post-partum herbal regimen that I prescribe. My patients have found her to be very easily reachable by phone, email, web, and Facebook, and they always thank me for introducing them to her!

  5. I’m doing great! Who knows if it was the pills or not, but I feel fabulous – much better than with the other two births.

No depression, great milk supply and I’m waiting to see how the hair things goes. Around three months I usually loose a ton of hair. Hopefully that won’t happen this time. I still have a few pills left and I figure I’ll take them if I feel down, tired or notice lots of hair loss.

    Thanks so much!

  6. Sara, thank you so much for preparing my placenta. I had never even heard of this process before I visited your site and I am fascinated by the procedure and the benefits. Thanks for making it so easy and working with my girlfriend for delivery and coming to my house to do the prep. My recovery has been great. No depression and my skin has looked great. I’m 4 1/2 mos out and am thinking about taking the rest of my pills now as I am definitely sleep deprived and my guess is these will help me get through the rough nights. I will spread the word to my soon to be mommy friends. THANKS AGAIN!

  7. I became very interested in placenta encapsulation when I heard of all the benefits it could have. My sister had milk supply issues and my best friend had horrible postpartum, so I thought I would be pro-active and give it a try. I met Sara at a parenting class and what I was most impressed was how “normal” she was. Then I was recommended to her by my acupuncturist and I was sold. The whole process was simple as I didn’t even know it happened. I took the recommended dosage and I don’t know if I am really a lucky person or it was the placenta but I have had plenty of milk supply, and zero depression. I definitely recommend encapsulating your placenta to all pregnant women and Sara is the woman to do it. And to top it all off, she gives the best massage ever!

  8. I am curious. What is the method of preparation for the placenta before you dehydrate it? The TCM method uses steaming. Do you do this or use a raw placenta?
There is much debate going around about how a placenta should only be done raw and not heated at all or the benefits are lost.
Wondering what are your thoughts on this?
    Thanks. Debra

    Comment by Debra Woods — May 26, 2011 @ 6:51 pm | Reply

  9. Hi Debra, indeed there is much debate over raw vs. steamed. I personally prepare it in the TCM way, by steaming it first with a couple of herbs. While I appreciate the benefits of raw foods in moderation, I prefer to prepare placentas in the TCM way. I have prepared close to 300 now in this way and all of my clients have benefited greatly. Jodi Selander of Placenta Benefits has recently put a study together on exactly this matter, raw vs. steamed, here is what has come of it so far….

“My paper sharing the results of the online survey will be reported in detail later, but the highlight was that 96% of the women who participated in our survey (190 women at the time the data was compiled) found placentophagy to be a “positive” or “very positive” experience. Additionally, nearly everyone who tried placenta for postpartum would use the placenta for a subsequent child (98%).”

On her blog, Jodi says that the preliminary testing of placenta substances before and after looks really promising. They “analyzed tissue from 12 human placentas in the unprepared form and compared each one to its encapsulated counterpart to identify the hormonal and nutritional composition of the organ and determine whether these potentially beneficial substances are in fact, available in various preparations of human placenta.”

“Dr. Daniel Benyshek presented the preliminary data from our intra-placental comparison study, where we look at what my method of preparation does to certain analytes in the placenta. Encouragingly, NONE of the analytes we’ve looked at thus far have been destroyed by processing! In fact, ferritin (the form of iron) actually increased. Also reported at the session were Active B12, Prolactin and Cortisol. I will share these results more fully after I get the details from Dr. Benyshek on what I can actually report. But we are all excited about this preliminary data.”

  10. Hi, can you tell me what is the opinion with regards to women who have had an epidural and then wish their placenta encapsulated? Is there any research information about this?
We know that drugs cross the placenta. How does that affect the placenta? Any info on that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks very much. Debra

    Comment by Debra Woods — May 28, 2011 @ 10:33 am | Reply

  11. Debra, I unfortunately cannot give you any scientific research on this, again in time, I believe Jodi Selander will be releasing studies on this very topic as well. I do know that I have prepared close to 300 placentas, a large portion of those women having had epidurals and some c-sections and they benefited just as much as my clients who had unmedicated births.

    Comment by Alicia — February 2, 2012 @ 11:04 am | Reply

    • So sorry for the late reply on this, yes, you can take placenta caps while pregnant! Speaking in Traditional Chinese Medicine terms the placenta is a kidney jing tonic and helps support qi and KD energy during pregnancy, it also builds blood at a time when many women experience low hemaglobin. Pregnancy is so draining on the body that any tonifying helps!

    • It has to be completely dry, no moisture what so ever before you can grind it. If there is even a slight bend to the pieces it is not ready, it should snap with no bend. I use a nutribullet, easy to sterilize and grinds to a fine powder.

  22. How many pills come from the placenta?

    Comment by Patty — September 1, 2013 @ 10:31 pm | Reply

    • It depends on the size of the placenta. Usually the bigger the baby, the bigger the placenta. On average, its usually around 120 capsules, often times more, sometimes a bit less. The tincture is an excellent option as well, only a small piece of the placenta is used and it literally gives you and baby a lifetime use.

I am currently researching different companies who offer the same service and would like to inquire about your quality control process as it pertains to pick-up, transport, storage, dehydration process, labeling, packaging, and delivery of the placenta.

We just want to ensure that the organ is correctly preserved, labeled, stored, and handled correctly from start to finish.

Our due date is this March 30, 2015. We are interested in the RAW Placenta Encapsulation and the Placenta Tincture. How long does the placenta tincture last?

  37. I’m expecting my first child on Monday and just heard about placenta encapsulation. Unfortunately with such a tight budget the 300 price tag is a bit high for me but I commend the great work you’re doing and wish I could partake in the wonderful service you provide!

  43. Had this done with my first child & fell in love with it. When I would forget to take the pills, I’d totally notice the difference. Now that I’m taking the tinture, i feel energised and awake, not drowsy or gloomy. I started giving the tinture to my 1 & 3 yr old boys. I regret not doing this on my second child SO MUCH!! But if we do have a 3rd one, will TOTALLY DO IT AGAIN. I recommend this to all my pregnant friends too & i am just soo for this. Thank you so much!! Yes, its a very pretty penny but worth every nickle & dime.
